Discernment
A vocation is, essentially, an occupation.
In a religious context, a vocation implies someone has had a divine call to live a religious life.
Through the Sacrament of Baptism, we all have one calling in our lives: holiness. This means following Jesus to the best of our abilities. However, holiness will look different depending on one’s specific vocation. It’s important to listen and recognize the signs that determine how one answers and finds a place in life.
A Word from Our Seminarians
I first felt a call to the priesthood in middle school. The idea that I may be called to the priesthood dawned on me during a conversation with a young priest at camp. It was simple as realizing that I even could be called to the priesthood. From that moment, I was convinced I did not want to be a priest, but I could never quite get rid of the idea that maybe I was supposed to be. That seed of my vocation really grew in college when I found a community of other young Catholics to call me higher and help me to build a life around prayer and the sacraments. With those three key ingredients of community, prayer, and the sacraments, my heart slowly softened to the idea of the priesthood. Eventually, the Lord helped me realize that I needed to try seminary before I would be at peace pursuing any other path.
